Weekend Roundup: Four Rivers ultimate triumphs at annual Invitational

The 22nd Four Rivers Ultimate Frisbee Tournament took place over the weekend in Greenfield, with the host Otters capturing the Girls Class A title and the Boys Class A championship.
The Four Rivers girls went 4-0 to win the tournament, with wins over Lincoln Sudbury (13-5), Academy of Charlemont (13-2) and Cape Elizabeth (13-0) before defeating Northfield Mount Hermon in the championship game (13-5). Tirz Skelton anchored the defense while Loie Acton and Sylvie Guillaume had strong performances for the Otters.
The Four Rivers boys also went 4-0 on the weekend, defeating Northampton (12-1), Newton North (13-2) and Lincoln Subbury (13-4) to reach the championship, where it took down NMH (12-5) to capture the title. Cooper Whitney tallied two goals and five assists in the championship game while Kolin Broderick and Russell Herbert had strong performances in the winning effort.
Athol 5, Turners 1 – Logan Cormier pitched a gem for the Athol baseball team on Sunday against Franklin Tech, striking out eight and allowing just four hits in seven innings work to lead the Bears to a 5-1 Bi-County North victory in Turners Falls.
"Logan mixed things up well and we were able to climb back into the mix for a league title,” Athol coach Josh Talbot said.
The Bears scored two in the first, two in the sixth and one in the seventh. Franklin Tech’s lone run came in the bottom of the seventh.
Raydin Sousa tallied a single and a double, Cormier and Ethan Heuer each knocked two hits, Hayden Barrieau tallied a hit and an RBI while Dom St. Andre and Alex Lavigne each knocked a hit in the win for Athol.
Tyler Yetter, Brody Hicks, George Gutierrez and Nick Prasol contributed the hits for Franklin Tech, with Mason Lehtomaki going the distance on the mound, striking out six and allowing nine hits.

Hopkins 6, Frontier 5 — The Golden Hawks held on to knock off the Redhawks in South Deerfield Saturday. Hopkins scored in the top of the seventh to make it a 6-4 game and the Frontier rally in the bottom of the frame fell just short.
Braeden Dion knocked three hits and drove in two runs, Kaden James recorded two hits and an RBI while Jack Cusson, Ben Caron and Shawn Baumann each hit safely for the Redhawks.
Franklin Tech 15, Pioneer 1 — Hannah Gilbert doubled, homered and drove in three while striking out 10 in the circle to lift the Eagles to a Franklin County League East victory over the Panthers Sunday.
Samantha Duncan cracked two hits, one a double, and drove in a two runs, Gianna DiSciullo doubled and knocked in two while Lindsey Taylor, Ava Worden, Skylei Lapan, Brayleigh Burgh, Taylor Underwood and Alison George each finished with a hit and an RBI for Tech.
Greenfield’s Shane Toomey and Palmer King competed in the PVIAC Championship tournament at Forest Park and Longmeadow High School over the weekend. Palmer King earned a win in his opening match over Belchertown’s Luke Dudek (6-4, 6-0) before falling to Jack Serafino of East Longmeadow in the second round (6-2, 6-3).
Toomey fell to West Springfield’s Brady Paquette in his opening match (3-6, 6-4, 6-1).

Lundgren Honda 10, Denny’s 8 — Joseph Locke and William Simanski each had three hits while Josiah Viveiros pitched in Lundgren’s AAA win Sunday.
Conner Bergeron and Mason Lovett homered while Waylon Boutelle scored for Denny’s.
Gruber & Tripp 17, Fitzgerald Real Estate 16 — Joey O’Hara had four hits while Liam McDonough scored twice in Gruber’s win Sunday. Connor Trainor singled and tripled while Will Adams and Jack Merrill each had two hits for Fitzgerald.
Ginger Cat Sealcoating 11, Gagne Wealth Management 4 — Rodney Behan and Wyatt Lapine both had six hits while Kydanie Rivera struck out three in Ginger Cat’s win Sunday. Charlie Schwerin, Morgan Wyngowski and Wes Goodrow hit safely for Gagne.
Sweet Lucy’s Bakeshop 22, Cherry Rum 12 — Brooks Llewelyn and Emmett Lyon each had four hits in Sweet Lucy’s win Sunday. Rylan Little and Summer Vera-Dreyer both had three hits for Cherry Rum.
The Franklin County Crush competed in the Just Play It Tournament in Hudson, New Hampshire this weekend, going 0-1-2.
The Crush tied the Hudson Heat, 8-8, behind six strikeouts from Dani Zraunig and hits from Penelope Gioules, Hayden Sadler, Makenna Ward, and Clara Behan.
The second game against the Hudson Heat ended in an 11-11 tie, with Makenna Ward pitching and Sadler knocking a base hit.
In the third game of the weekend against the Windham Wildcats, the Crush fell, 13-3. Savannah Thomas struck out three while Zraunig and Behan each had a hit.
The Greenfield United U9 team beat Agawam, 17-2, behind five goals from Arlo Gilman-Goddard, four goals from Maxwell Gilman-Goddard, four goals from Maximo Tomas, two goals from Julian Hake and goals from Elias Koppenheffer and Braylin Murphy. Gannon, Maxwell Gilman-Goddard, Hake, Benaiah Koppenheffer, Tomas and Boston Westerman had assists while Kevin Nguyen made nine saves.
Th e Greenfield U8 team beat Easthampton, 5-0, behind three goals from Caden Thomas and goals from River Shurman and Francis Zaccara. Zaccara had two assists, Liam Boeding had an assists while Rowen Murphy made 11 saves.
